Event Recap: Fashion and Social Media

“There’s a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking.”

Indeed, there is. On March 20, we were joined by four of DC’s premier digital fashionistas to discuss the latest trends in social media and fashion. Many thanks to moderator Eliot Payne (@eliotpayne) and panelists Patrice Washington (@prjwashington), Nikki Rappaport from Hugh & Crye (@nikkirap), and fashion blogger Lacey Maffettone (@LacePerspective) for an engaging discussion. We would also like to thank iStrategy Labs for the awesome venue. Finally, thanks to everyone who attended for packing the house! We hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did.

Key takeaways

  • Find a niche. You can’t be all things to all people. Bland and boring doesn’t work.
  • Blogs are widely used in the fashion world and a very important component of building your brand.
  • It takes time and experimentation to grow your community. Talk to people, offer to guest post.
  • Experiment with various social media platforms, but focus on the ones that work best.
  • Panelists unanimously like Instagram for personal branding, but majority focused on Facebook page for business results due to wide audience.

We participated in STYLE ME FRIDAY – with a budget friendly twist

I love the STYLE ME Friday looks that’s hosted over at the Fashionista Next Doors charming blog. For the longest time, I’ve been meaning to participate. This time, I managed to make it happen, but I did it with a twist. My entire outifit is comprised of items that I’ve purchased from the Yours/Mine Secondhand Shopping Soiree (minus the shoes and bag).

Denim shirt – Banana Republic (gently used and cost less that $5)
Tangerine pull over top – H&M ( $3 still had tags)
White slacks – Ann Taylor (brand new with tags $7)
Shoes – Enzo (two years old) – Ironically, up until last Sunday, I owned a pair of leopard pumps, until I gave them away.
Snakeskin clutch bag – (8 months old and on sale and Ann Taylor Loft for $20)

I think YMSSS Creator, Patrice has demonstrated that getting magazine inspired looks is doable on a dime.

Were you at the Twitter Party?

thrift chat 2twitter partyWe did that. Today, the YMSSS team kicked off the inaugural Twitter party where YMSSS Intern, Eugenia B. dished on her favorite places to shop for secondhand/vintage and offered thrifting tips. Among the buzz at the party was best places for estate sell items, vintage prom dress, places to shop for your corporate attire and much more. There was definitely something for everyone at this party. If you missed the party, you can catch all the deets by searching hashtags #YMSSS and #YMSSSThrift. If you’re a stylista who believes that fashion shouldn’t be a compromise with finances, we’d love to have you host a YMSSS Twitter party. Twitter parties take place the first Friday of each month. If interested in joining us, send an email to secondhandthrifting @gmail.com and someone will get back with you.
